SUSTAINABLE PROJECTS FUND OF THE CITY OF VEVEY: THE SHARED WHEAT GARDENS (by Alexandra Baumgartner & foodculture days)
For the people living in Vevey, we invit you to vote for our project via the websie of the City of Vevey
The Sustainable Projects Fund is an annual call for projects organized by the City of Vevey. Its aim is to bring together local actors to propose and implement projects in Vevey that contribute to creating a low-carbon, livable environment.
"The Shared Wheat Gardens": A social, ecological, and civic experiment in Vevey
The Shared Wheat Gardens is a social and ecological civic experiment that reimagines alternative grain economies by cultivating, harvesting, and manually processing heritage wheat for and from Vevey, in collaboration with local ancestral mills. The idea is to grow ancient wheat in a decentralized and cooperative way. The concept is simple: the initiative distributes a wheat cultivation kit to interested individuals, who then plant it in their own gardens. The harvest and processing of the wheat is done collectively, and seasonal cultural initiatives are organized to engage with current topics surrounding this plant.
The initiative aims to grow local grains to support food sovereignty rather than profit. The goal is to produce more nutritious wheat while fostering grassroots change by helping people understand how food systems could become more resilient in the face of the climate crisis.
Covering a full growth cycle, the wheat field offers opportunities to observe and reflect on the role of wheat in our present and future society through public events and community work in the field. The project is proposed by Swiss artist and researcher Alexandra Baumgartner in collaboration with foodculture days.
